Why selling into Indonesia is different
- Bahasa Indonesia is preferred for warmth and trust, even where English is understood.
- Hierarchy shapes buying: a limited company (PT) is run by a board of directors, usually led by a President Director, with a separate board of commissioners overseeing it, so decide early who owns the budget.
- Chat apps are central to business communication, so email often opens the door and the conversation continues elsewhere.
- The Personal Data Protection Law, UU PDP, has applied in full since October 2024.
When to send, and when not to
Jakarta, the main business centre, is on Western Indonesia Time, an hour behind Singapore, so a 9:30am Singapore send lands at 8:30am there. During Ramadan working rhythms shift earlier, and the Idul Fitri week empties offices, with collective leave days (cuti bersama) added around major holidays. Who to search for
The top executive of an Indonesian company is usually the President Director, or Direktur Utama in Bahasa Indonesia, with directors such as the Finance Director (Direktur Keuangan) below. Titles are matched as you type them, so search both the English and the Bahasa Indonesia forms.
Many Indonesians use a single name, so search by title and company rather than by name, and greet with Pak for men and Ibu for women.
